RICHMOND has started negotiations to re-sign potential free agent Nathan Foley, whose form has been a highlight of the Tigers' recent resurgence.

Foley, 26, has shaken off three years of injury and subdued form, and is averaging 6.5 tackles to go with his 23 possessions a week.

He would be on the free agency market if he came out of contract.

Richmond's head of football Craig Cameron said the Tigers were eager to re-sign Foley.

"We have started negotiations and we don't see any issues there," he said. "We are really happy with the way he's come back after 18 months out."

Foley has had surgery on his achilles tendon three times and...

IT WAS appropriate that Richmond wingman Shaun Grigg should kick the goal that broke the Sydney Swans' challenge in their round-seven match at the MCG.

The 24-year-old former Blue has set up many Richmond goals with his dashes from midfield during the early part of the season.

On Saturday he was on the end of a few, booting three vital goals to steer the Tigers towards victory.

The Swans had the momentum after scoring four goals to one in the third quarter.

Richmond led by 14 points at three-quarter time but the Swans seemed a real chance to steamroll over the Tigers.

But Grigg deflated the Swans' plans by kicking a running goal...

THIS Tigers team is worth watching. Why? Because they have class and comedy and characters. Class? Brett Deledio, 30th minute of the first quarter last weekend, Richmond v Port Adelaide, AAMI Stadium. Deledio can win the ball inside packs, the first requirement of a top midfielder, but this time he appeared as a fleeting shadow on the outside.

Taking the ball, he ran another 15 or so metres during which no one got near him. In the course of this fluent, high-speed motion, he delivered a superb 55-metre pass that bent away in the air so that it arrived at precisely the moment Jake King did, softly smacking into his hands.

King dropped it....

Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt denies he has been injured and thanked coach Damien Hardwick for some tough love during his AFL form slump.

After a lean start to the season, Riewoldt showed better signs when he kicked four goals in Sunday's much-needed win over Port Adelaide.

There was speculation that Riewoldt had been carrying an injury, but the 2010 Coleman Medallist said his problems were all due to mindset.

"I thought I was going to walk back in and start playing really good footy ... but it's been a bit of a solid slog," he said.

"It really comes down to me, it's about the tackling, it's about the little one percenters and...

THE Mullet didn't need to touch the ball. He didn't need to take a mark or knock someone over. All the Mullet needed to do to be taken to the bosom of the braying voices of the Punt Road end was to run out onto the ground and shake his lustrous half-mane.

The Mullet is a cult hero. More than that, he is a Richmond cult hero. There might be no bigger thing in football. To date he has been a silent action hero. Talking is for others.

Fortunately, there are plenty of others happy to do the talking. The Mullet's mullet has its own Facebook page, ''Ivan Maric's Mullet''. There are web talkfests on it ''The Ivan Maric Mullet Appreciation...

RICHMOND full-back Alex Rance says he is ready to become the leader of the Tigers' defensive unit after a year of boxing above his weight against the game's best key forwards.

While captain Chris Newman remains the back-line general, the Tigers will charge Rance, Jayden Post and Dylan Grimes - three emerging defenders with a total of just 77 games between them - with the responsibility of stopping the opposition's best goalkickers.

And there are few greater challenges than the one the trio faces at the MCG tomorrow night, against Collingwood twin towers Travis Cloke and Chris Dawes under the spotlight provided by 70,000 fans.

FOOTBALL broke Steven Morris' heart at a tender age. The 23-year-old described his teenage self as if it were yesterday, sitting alone in front of his computer and watching the 2008 AFL rookie draft with increasing despair as all the wrong names flashed onto the screen.

Morris had trained with four clubs - Richmond, Carlton, Collingwood and Melbourne - at the end of 2007.

Injuries and skills that fell short had already left him overlooked in successive national drafts, but he had believed the Demons might throw him a lifeline and make him a rookie. When they didn't, the 19-year-old packed his bags and moved to South Australia....

RICHMOND fans are entitled to ask why 2012 will be better than 2011, 2010, 2009 and about 25 other years since 1982. The Tigers didn't get the No. 1 pick in the draft, didn't lure the next Chris Judd to Punt Road last October and don't have a champion full-back returning from a shoulder injury.

Brett Deledio is moving from half-back to the midfield, but that change is like a cabinet reshuffle - the gains in the Ministry of Stoppages will be offset somewhat by a loss in the Department of Defence. Deledio can play in only one place at a time.

While young teams budget for ''natural'' improvement, it's new personnel, or those returning from...

The Richmond Football Club board tonight announced that it has extended the contract of senior coach Damien Hardwick for a further two years, until the end of the 2014 season.

“Damien was appointed two years ago to transform our football team and build a side that would compete with the best in the competition,” said Richmond president Gary March.

“After two years, the board is absolutely convinced Damien is the right man to take this Club forward and, as such, we have...

THE problem with far-reaching five-year plans is that at some stage they come back to bite you.

Terry Wallace was roundly mocked for his constant references to long-term plans at Richmond, so much so that he still jokes about it now.

But Richmond is an ambitious club, so it has set ambitious plans.

The club declared in 2010 that by 2014 it would have played finals three times (with a top four finish), have attracted 75,000 members, and be clear of debt.

Do the sums and that means Richmond must make finals every year from now to 2014.

No wiggle room, no way of backing out.

It is a bold contrast: Richmond's own plan shouts from the...
